Important Notes
Attached below is the New Student Introductory Training Guide, but that on its own is not enough. There are many other important notes and documents for students and parents to know available via the drop-down menu above.
New Student Introductory Training Guide
All new students should take the time to read and understand the Introductory Training Guide. This guide gives the student an idea of the foundations and traditions of this dojo, and this program. It also provides a guideline of the expectations from both the student, and the program training plan.
This guide is for ALL New Students whether they are wearing a uniform or not. The complete White Belt Training Guide is provided to students who purchase a complete uniform set. The White Belt Training Guide is a more comprehensive guide that includes the physical and technical requirements expected from students in order to attain their next rank.

Attendance is taken at the end of each rank-group session. The student will walk past the ID-scan station to sign out. Students will not have the opportunity to grab their ID from their bag.

Dojo Etiquette
- Before entering the Dojo, stop and properly bow into the Dojo when you arrive at the doorway, before stepping inside.
- Before leaving the Dojo, stop and properly bow INTO the Dojo just before stepping out to leave. As you approach the doorway, stop, turn to face the inside the Dojo, properly bow, take a step back out of the Dojo, then turn around to leave.
- Bow to instructors if you arrive late or leave early. Bowing is not for worship or debasement, but is an indication of respect or trust (much like the handshake).
- If you need to speak to any instructor, you must wait at natural stance until the instructor acknowledges you. You then properly bow to the instructor before speaking with them. After you have finished speaking, say "Thank you Sensei", properly bow, take one step back, and then turn around to walk away.
- If you are not allowed to bow due to religious reasons, you must use the alternate bow when meeting an instructor.
Philosophies
These are only some of the facts and philosophies that are part of Piscataway Martial Arts. We will learn more and more as the year progresses. All students must memorize the following:
Other phrases students should memorize:
- Founder of Piscataway Martial Arts and Piscataqua Dojo: Sensei George Maldonado, 1994
- Founder of Neko-Ryu Goshin Jitsu : Professor Ernie Cates, 1960
- Meaning of Goshin Jitsu: Techniques for Defense of the Body
- Founder of Cuong-Nhu: GrandMaster Ngo Dong; Vietnam in 1965
- Meaning of Cuong-Nhu: Hard-Soft ; Hard style of Karate-do, Soft style of Aikido and Tai Chi, incorporated with hand techniques of Boxing and Wing Chun, and grappling/throwing of Judo
- Three-O's Principle: Open Mind, Open Heart, Open Arms
- Five A's for Self Defense: Awareness, Alertness, Avoidance, Anticipation, Action
- Five F's for Martial Arts: Fun, Friendship, Focus, Fly your spirit, Finish your goals
Other phrases students should memorize:
- Piscataway Martial Arts students should strive to improve themselves and their abilities in the martial arts in order to serve the people.
- Only by absolute discipline of mind, body, and spirit do students maintain honor in martial arts.
- Martial Arts is a physical exercise to achieve a mental state.
- Every class is a test, and every test is just another class.
- Enlighten your Mind, Strengthen your Body, Free your Spirit
- You don't need to be better than anyone else, you just need to be better than you used to be
- As you succeed, help 2 others to also succeed
Definitions
- Sensei (pronounced sen-say): Teacher. For all disciplines, this is someone who has reached a black belt level.
Example: Sensei George, Sensei Ray, Sensei Tracy - Sempai (pronounced sem-pie): Senior member of the class, who leads by example in certain situations.
Example: Sempai Tanya, Sempai Kia, Sempai Kenneth - Kata: A choreographed sequence of movements against imaginary opponents.
- Irimi: In typical Irimi, we approach the attacker more directly by approaching his front, or rather to his inside. Primarily, we slide at an angle towards the assailant. This angle can vary depending upon the technique we are performing and other small variables. Basically, we can vary the Irimi positioning to fit the need at hand. Sometimes we need to slide in deeply, or drop our body lower when we enter, etc. In nearly all cases, it is practiced as a single movement before the execution of the actual technique (such as Shihonage or Sokumen - Iriminage). The work involved in the irimi entrance is getting your best positioning during the attack.
Ref.: Aikido World © Web Journal - Tenkan: Tenkan is an entrance to the attacker that involves a step to the outside of his body and 180 degrees turn and stepping back once again. The difficulty in positioning here is that you need to be constantly aware where your positioning is in relationship to the attacker. Being that both persons should always be moving during the technique - getting the best positioning for the technique takes time to master.
Ref.: Aikido World © Web Journal - Atemi: In Japanese martial arts, the term atemi designates blows to the body, as opposed to twisting of joints, strangleholds, holding techniques and throws. Atemi can be delivered by any part of the body to any part of the opponents body. They can be percussive or use 'soft' power. Karate is a typical martial art focusing on percussive atemi. The location of nerve and pressure points, such as might be used for certain acupressure methods, also often informs the choice of targets for atemi.
Ref.: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Mushin : achieved when a person's mind is free from thoughts of anger, fear, or ego during combat or everyday life; totally free to act and react towards an opponent without hesitation and without disturbance from such thoughts. At this point, a person relies not on what they think should be the next move, but what is their trained natural reaction (or instinct) or what is felt intuitively. It is not a state of relaxed, near-sleepfulness, however. The mind could be said to be working at a very high speed, but with no intention, plan or direction.
Important Notes to Parents
For the safety of your children, please walk in and walk out your children from the Dojo. It is not acceptable for your children to simply be dropped off and picked up from the front entrance of the school. You must come inside to drop off your child for class, then pick them up inside at the end of class. Your children will not be permitted to leave at the end of class without being with a parent or guardian.
Please come to class ON TIME! Refer to the class schedule for the start and end times of your child's class.
Please remind your child(ren) that the Dojo is a place to learn. Therefore, encourage them to be focused on learning and practicing their skills.
If your child has any type of medical condition, separation anxiety, personal stress, exhaustion, etc. which may need your attention at any moment, please stay in the Dojo at all times. It is critical that you do not leave the martial arts instructors and administration to handle an emergency with your child, especially if you already know of an existing or on-going situation or condition.
In case of inclement weather, call the Piscataway Recreation Department's Weather Hotline at 732-562-2389. A recorded message will tell you if Piscataway schools are closed due to poor weather conditions.

Uniform
If you would like to purchase a uniform for your child, please print the Uniform Order Form, and bring the form to class. Submit the form along with your cash-only payment to an instructor.
Please note the following:
Please note the following:
- It takes about 2 weeks from the date of order for the uniform to be ready
- Uniforms are delivered during class at the dojo
- Only students wearing a full PMA uniform are permitted to test for rank
- Uniforms from other martial arts schools should not be worn at PMA
Training Equipment and Pads
It is necessary for students to have and use safety equipment in order to participate in light to medium contact sparring. Sparring is introduced to higher rank students and usually occurs during the 8:15 to 9:00 class on Tuesdays and Fridays. Print the Equipment Order Form to view recommended sparring equipment and prices.
All students should have their own gear bag for their equipment. Be sure to mark your equipment with your name or initials so that you can readily identify it.
